When employment ends, it is quite common for an employer and an employee to agree to enter into a settlement agreement (previously known as compromise agreements). 

The purpose of the settlement agreement is to regulate matters arising from the termination and in particular, for the employee to agree to waive his or her employment rights (e.g. a claim of unfair dismissal) in return for an appropriate ex gratia termination payment the first £30,000 of which is tax free.
